what is a chemical peel?

On their own, the words “chemical” and “peel” don’t evoke warm and fuzzy feelings. But put together, they’re even scarier. However, when you peel back the layers, you realise chemical peels are really just a kind of exfoliation.

chemical vs. physical exfoliation

here are a lot of reasons to exfoliate regularly, from skin-smoothing to radiance-boosting. With so many different types on the market, the difficult part is deciding which is best for you. That’s why we’re breaking down why we’re fans of chemical exfoliators - aka peels - over scrubs. For starters, exfoliating acids offer a more controlled exfoliation, i.e. there’s less risk of you overdoing it. As a result, they’re less irritating than physical exfoliators which can be abrasive and produce more favourable results with fewer problems. But then, they also go deeper within the skin than scrubs do, making them more powerful, too.

in-office vs. at-home chemical peels

The main difference between in-office and at-home chemical peels lies in the concentrations of each. At-home peels usually have about 10% (or less) AHA or BHA, while professional formulas can contain up to 70%. The stronger the concentration, the deeper the peel penetrates. While deep peels offer the greatest level of improvement, they also require long recovery times and can cause redness and flaking (à la Samantha Jones' in Sex and the City). Just know that professional peels come in all shapes and sizes - superficial, medium and deep - so you should be able to find one that’s safe for your skin if you consult your trusted skincare specialist. That said, we’re still major fans of at-home peels because they deliver results - just more gradually - with none of the scary side effects. Read more in depth info here: all about chemical peels

which ingredients should you look for in an at-home chemical peel?

When it comes to choosing an at-home peel, we recommend looking for AHAs - particularly glycolic acid. This trendy skincare ingredient naturally occurs in sugar cane and fruits - like pineapples and grapes. In simple terms, it works by firstly dissolving the glue that holds together dead skin cells and secondly by triggering the skin to speed up cell renewal. This makes glycolic acid the go-to-ingredient for addressing hyperpigmentation, pores, skin texture and lines and wrinkles. But that’s not all! Glycolic acid peels are overachievers and will also maximise the benefits of your other skincare products. With continued use, your skin will feel smoother and look more radiant and even-toned.

chemical peel precautions

Though at-home chemical peels are gentler, it's still important not to overdo it. Here’s how to get the most out of an at-home peel without leaving your skin irritated:

  1. Sensitive skin? Consult a skincare specialist before incorporating peels into your routine
  2. Follow the introductory phase skin regimen
  3. Apply every second or third night (or as directed by your skincare specialist)
  4. Always start with clean skin
  5. Use products that combine gentle exfoliating acids with hydrating and barrier-repairing ingredients
  6. Follow the treatment up with your specific skin type moisturiser and a sunscreen with at least SPF 30
  7. introduce retinoids slowly into your at home chemical peel regime
  8. If you experience burning or itching, wash the product off immediately
